Day 135-136 Walga Rock & Cue Outback trip

Avaldatud: 28.10.2022

After a couple of days at the west coast, it is time for a detour to the Western Australia Outback, more precisely to the 'Uluru of Western Australia' Walga Rock.

It is about 5h drive to Walga Rock past the wheat belt of Australia into the Outback. We were not so sure, whether Cue will have any dinner options, so went for some pizza at a roadhouse in Mt Magnet. Well, Stuart thought it was very funny what they think is a large pizza - but better a small pizza than nothing at all.

To get to Walga Rock, you need to drive on a gravel road to a gate of which you have to know, that you are allowed to open it because there are no signs or anything. Well, the description of the rock sounded a lot better than the actual view on it. The rock is only about 45m high, so not very impressive. At the Walga Rock sign is another gate for walking to the rock to have a look at the Aboriginal Rock Arts. The ship looks impressive, but not sure, whether this painting is really ancient as it looks pretty different to the other rock art at Walga Rock.

After driving around the rock, we decided not worth to climb it. We were heading back to Cue instead and walking down the big main street of this once upon big city. There are some old buildings remaining from the good old times but otherwise there is no life left in this town.

So after a windy night in our roof top tent in Cue Tourist Park we were driving back to the west coast for out next destination Jurien Bay. On the drive back we saw in the morning some wildlife, e.g. kangaroos and emus, but otherwise there is nothing more to see. As we had an early start and with no more lookouts and viewpoints along the way, we drove along the coastline from Greenhead to Jurien Bay stopping along Dynamite Bay. The Bay has a beautiful beach with some walking along the coast, but for swimming or even some beach time it is to windy & cold although the sun was shining.

In Jurien Bay we went for some groceries to prepare a big homemade veggie burger for Stuart, because he was very hungry after this'large' pizza on the other day. Stuart was then happy to just have a sleep in the not so windy accommodation while we went to the beach to watch the sunset.
