Digby - Truro

Avaldatud: 26.09.2021

Not much of the bright sunshine from yesterday left today. It's raining. But overall, I would say that I've been very lucky so far. So you just have to accept such days even if you can't avoid them. Because I have to keep driving.

The breakfast is very lovely. And I meet Sebastian, a German from Frankfurt, originally from Chemnitz. Sebastian is what I would call a cool guy. He has visited 46 out of the 50 US states. And he seems to be constantly on the move. As an employee of the German railway, it seems he can afford it. But who's talking about that? He's traveling here for a total of two weeks, from Frankfurt to Halifax. Like me, he has a rental car and is driving around the peninsula. But his remaining program is quite something. He flies from Halifax to Newfoundland at the end to visit Gander. Or rather, the Gander Airport. It apparently used to be a transit point to Cuba during the GDR era, and that interests him. When I told him that there's not much going on in Gander except for the airport, he replied that he knows that. From there, he flies back to Halifax after two days, then 5 hours later to Toronto, and then back to Frankfurt. It just turned out that way. Respect.

When I finally start driving, it's raining even more. I can forget about my trail. Even with a rain jacket, I would be soaking wet. So I continue towards Truro, my destination for today. On the highway, it becomes really unpleasant. I have never experienced such rain on a highway. I'm about to stop. But since everyone just continues driving with enough distance, I join in.

Shortly before reaching my destination, it clears up in the sky. I exit the highway and drive along the coast again. Even though the weather is not good, the atmosphere here is just great. And visiting the Burntcoat Head Park is especially amazing, where you can visit the seabed at low tide - and it's currently low tide. The friendly lady at the entrance reminds me to A be back in half an hour and B not to go swimming. I obey. It's astonishing how far the sea retreats here. The largest tidal range in the world.

I safely return to the car and head to Truro, where I stayed overnight at the beginning. And so the circle closes. My motel is first-class. And after a short unpacking, I go to the Fundy Discovery Site. There you can marvel at the tidal bore. That's when the sea comes back and flows upstream in the river.

And it's truly impressive. At exactly 4:44 am, the water floods a sandbank with tremendous force. And it whips itself up the river. It's strange when a river flows the wrong way. Tomorrow I will see even bigger effects. I hope so, anyway. In any case, it will be a good night tonight. Because the road is quite far away. Now the neighbors just need to be quiet.
