Day 11: Wells next the Sea and Hunstanton

Avaldatud: 18.07.2023

Wells next the sea is located a 30-minute drive from Cromer. It is another coastal town with a small harbor and a shopping street. We choose a parking lot right at the harbor and walk to the beach. The path seems short from the harbor, but it is almost 2 kilometers of easy walking. We end up at the beach, where there is a lifeboat station and many colorful beach huts on stilts. These huts, used by sunbathers, are maybe 4 square meters in size. It is low tide now, and many people are on the beach. The sun is shining, but it's only 20 degrees, too cold for us to swim. We have to walk back and end up at the harbor again. Some tourists are trying to catch crabs. It looks contagious, and I buy two nets for 2 pounds each, and we give it a try. We use our salami as bait. It takes a while, but we finally succeed, and after changing our spot, the first crab bites. We throw our nets for about 1 hour and catch a total of 6 small and big crabs. It's a lot of fun. In the end, we throw the crabs back into the harbor basin.
Afterwards, we continue our journey along the coast to Hunstanton. The town has a cliff made of two-colored limestone. The lower layer is red limestone, which is about 99 to 108 million years old, and the layer above it is white limestone, which is about 93 to 99 million years old. We take the opportunity to walk on the mudflats below the cliffs. After about 800 meters, we reach a steam fishing boat that sank in 1947 and now lies here in the Wadden Sea. Fortunately, it is low tide, so we can see the details. It's not possible to visit at high tide.
Afterward, we stroll back and search for stones and shells. The children use their shovels and dig in the mud. We take a small walk through the town, which is very touristy. On the way to the campsite, we pass a lavender garden. We spontaneously stop and discover the different varieties of this purple plant. They are all blooming and beautiful to look at. Around 5:30, we reach the campsite at Sandringham. There are a lot of rabbits here, and the site is only half booked. We cook our dinner. Unfortunately, it's raining again, but we extend our awning and can cook without getting wet.
