Nostalgic childhood memories of THE series of the 90s came today .... 60 kilometers from Liepaja to Pavilosta with strong headwind - all sorts of thoughts come to mind to keep yourself entertained :) Nevertheless: we already noticed yesterday (May 15th) that driving on the Latvian 'highways' is quite good: wide roads, best road surface with little rolling resistance and still a beautiful landscape! There are no explicit prohibition signs for cyclists, but there are road crossings for pedestrians and bus stops, so the highways can't be taken too seriously. Joke aside: we already understand why Eastern European truck drivers often walk on German highways, because it's completely different here. It's called 'A11/A12 etc.', but it's just a good and wide federal road. And for someone like us who has 50-60km ahead by bike, every good piece of road is appreciated, although the paths through the woods are of course much more attractive!
In Liepaja, a somewhat characterless small town with a very well-kept park and a great white sandy beach, we spent a relaxed day at the beach in the best weather and then spent the night in our somewhat worn-out accommodation!
In general, we noticed that a lot of work is being put into well-kept parks and (small) gardens in Latvia: no matter how old and in need of renovation the house may be, it always has very natural and tidy gardens and at least 10 tulips.... it seems that the Dutch have also had their say here at some point! The parks are equally beautiful: you won't find any rubbish or dog poop!
Today, the longest distance so far was rewarded with the most beautiful accommodation so far: large, bright, cozy with lots of wood and a great style!
So it's time to say goodbye to the sea for now, tomorrow we will continue inland - off to Riga!
