The first day we arrived in Red Rock Canyon, we were amazed by the scenery. The name says it all, as the rocks consist mostly of bright red sandstone. But it’s even more beautiful as it varies widely in colour from white to pink to deep black iron plates. Plus, there are some striking feather-like structures from the ancient sand dune layers. Obviously, we couldn’t wait until the next day to lay our hands on these rocks. So, we did some nice sport climbing routes up the cool iron plates on the bright red rock at the Panty Wall in the evening.
The following day, we snatched a campsite at the Red Rock Campground firstly. Again, we had to struggle with the heat and sun, so we waited a bit until the routes got in the shade. Finally, we climbed our first multi-pitches at the Riding Hood Wall. It features a splendid, easy, trad crack route as well as a steep face climb called Big Bad Wolf 5.9, which is simply fun. We also did Gnat Man Crag, which is rated only 5.7, but the first move is an awkward mantle, which felt a bit harder. However, the rest of the route is an enjoyable crack and a layback flake.
