Tag 94 - In the streets of Granada

Eldonita: 06.02.2018

Silvana sent me the two photos of the homeless old woman I recently talked about. So, this is her living room, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. She really lives there, I have never seen her anywhere else. I wouldn't even know how she would transport her belongings. Unimaginable to have to live like that.

By the way, it comes to my mind: Silvana has a friend who has been visiting Nicaragua on and off for a couple of years. Two or three years ago, he met Carla there. She has three children from three different fathers. I don't know how she made a living back then. But he granted her a private microcredit, which enabled her to start a small income: she buys Nicaraguan handicrafts from a wholesaler and sells them to tourists in the streets of Granada. This has significantly improved the living standard of her family. She earns between 50 and 500 Cordoba per evening, which is about €1.60 to €16.00. She has had electricity in her house for two years now and last year she was able to buy a refrigerator. She sends her three daughters to school. In a really good month, she earns €300. How can she save anything from that?

This Silvanian friend asked her to locate Carla and then go shopping with her in a large supermarket. Silvana found her and went shopping with her a total of three times, twice at her own expense. I believe she was impressed by how careful Carla is with money, ensuring that her girls finish school, and how modest her children are. I am pretty impressed myself. Silvana left me some money so that I can go to the supermarket with Carla once more. I will meet her for that at the end of the month. And I want to do it again in March.

Weather unchanged.
