14.08.19 - 20.08.19 Daintree Rainforest and heading south

After saying goodbye to Schtä and Luki in Cairns, we continued north for another day. The Daintree Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was going to be our final destination in the north. We took a great coastal road and a short but expensive ferry crossing to get there. We went for a few walks in the rainforest and even came across a Cassowary. These birds look pretty funky and we were advised to be cautious around them, so we were feeling a bit uneasy when we suddenly encountered one. We decided to turn back, just to be safe, and everything turned out fine. The rainforest has a lot of other amazing things to discover as well.

We had booked a room in a "Jungle Camp" for our accommodation, which allowed guests to sleep in semi-open rooms and hear everything around them - both the birds and the snoring neighbors. But it was still nice, and it was especially amusing to listen to the German seniors and how alternative they felt in such a place.

The next 6 days were all about making kilometers. Ponyo took us a little closer to Melbourne and a little closer to the cold every day. Soon, we had to replace our shorts with long pants again, and the nights became bitterly cold. We had some nice sleeping spots, especially one that took us along a pretty remote Outback road, which Ponyo handled excellently once again. Otherwise, the fastest route south didn't have sooo much to offer. A few nice towns, that's about it. But we were definitely excited to see the Melbourne skyline again.

So, 15,000km later, we're back where we started, in our beautiful house in Clifton Hill, where we'll be staying for the next little while.
