May 4-5, 2022: Butrinti, Saranda, Bunecit Beach
F. In the evening, we went to the Albanian coast. Since camping is allowed almost everywhere in Albania, we wanted to stay directly on the beach. But the beach in Gjiri i Hartës was still being built - or rather filled up. So we drove to a viewpoint that was marked as a sunset spot on GoogleMaps. The name was also the program that evening. We enjoyed our dinner while watching a beautiful sunset.
The next morning we went to Butrinti, one of the most visited places in Albania. This is an archaeological site on a peninsula. Here you can find Greek, Roman, and medieval ruins. For travelers who only visit Albania, this is the ideal place to see all three major epochs in one archaeological site. For me, this site was nice to look at, but we have seen much better archaeological sites with better-preserved monuments and more information lately. However, one advantage of this archaeological site was that it was mostly located in the forest, so we didn't have to view the excavations in the blazing sun.
From Butrinti we went to Saranda, a tourist port city. The hotels here are lined up along the coast. There are often 4-star or 5-star hotels to be found here. After a short walk along the promenade, we had seen enough and used the tourist infrastructure to go shopping for groceries.
In the afternoon, we finally wanted to go to the beach. We chose the Bunecit beach. It is not very big, but it offers an ideal parking space as it is not yet completely built up with restaurants and hotels. We shared our parking space with a few other campers, two street dogs, and a herd of horses. The water has become one degree warmer again and we can now swim in water that is 17 degrees warm. In addition, the water here is beautifully blue - sometimes even milky blue. The beach is a stone beach, but I'm slowly getting used to it. We spent the whole next day at the beach, enjoying the sun and the beautiful color of the sea.
Day 202 - Total tour 15,553 km
