29.11.2019 Glenorchy

Before we came to Glenorchy, we only heard that the landscape and area in and around Glenorchy is very beautiful.
However, our main reason for going there was that we wanted to hike the second half of the Routeburn Track from there.

In this corner of New Zealand, unfortunately there are no official free campsites.
Why is that always so important to us? Well, it's not that we depend on every cent, but the more we can save on something like this, the more we can invest it in other things :-), like the luge track in Queenstown.
Also, here in Glenorchy, you have to pay 8-15 dollars per person per night for the campsites and only for the fact that there is an outhouse..
In Glenorchy, we visited a few Lord of the Rings filming locations, Toni brought an extra book for that. On the Bob's Cove trail (2 hrs round trip), we were able to see the spot where Sam and Frodo discovered the Oliphaunts, as well as where Sam cooked rabbits with Smeagol, Lord of the Rings fans will definitely recognize these spots.

We spent a night at the Diamond Lake campsite, which we had to drive on a really bad road (gravel road with several potholes). We had a super clear starry sky overnight.
Mike was able to go fishing again and Jenny took lupine photos, Glenorchy is definitely highly recommended and worth it if the weather is good :). We definitely recommend refuelling beforehand! In Glenorchy itself, the petrol cost 2.49 dollars per liter and fortunately, we were still able to refuel for slightly less (2.32 dollars) before Queenstown.
