Our next destination is Clevedon. Here, an old pier is part of the scenery. We are surprised that we have to pay an entrance fee to access the pier. An elderly English lady greets us and tells us the history of the pier. Many years ago, when a test was carried out to assess the stability of the pier, it collapsed. The country declined to rebuild it as it would have been too expensive. The residents of Clevedon did not accept this. A donation appeal was launched. This allowed the pier to be gradually rebuilt. It was suggested that each donor could screw a metal plaque (for memorial purposes or simply with their name) onto the pier. Today, over 15,000 such plaques adorn the walls and floor of the wooden pier, and people are extremely proud of it.
