Arequipa, the White City (2300m)

This designation is somewhat misleading, because yes, this wonderful colonial city is characterized by many white buildings made of volcanic rock, but unfortunately the expression has a more ugly background: it was considered white because parts of the center were reserved for white colonial rulers and could not be entered by indigenous people. Fortunately, this is no longer the case today, and you can see both many locals and tourists. Compared to other cities in Peru, Arequipa is very prosperous and open-minded. The public buses are in better condition and the clothing style is less traditional. The cityscape is framed by 2 mountains, once by Chachani (6000m) and especially by the legendary stratovolcano El Misti (5800m).

We spent a whole week there, although not entirely voluntarily, because we were both flat on our backs with fever and digestive problems. Nevertheless, we were able to admire the magnificent center with its cathedral and functioning (!) organ. Actually, a visit to an organ concert was planned, but we preferred to vegetate in bed with fever dreams.

In addition, we visited the fantastic Santa Catalina Monastery. We have actually never seen anything like it: the complex of the Dominican nuns covers 20,000 square meters and is actually built like a city within the city. The nuns lived in spacious and winding cells with mostly their own kitchen and courtyard. Like many hermits in a monastery complex. 3 cloisters, church, gallery, gardens and cemetery, as well as some 'town squares' are included. But as often here, the church is rather disappointing compared to the rest, especially from the inside. Not to mention the condition of the organs.

We will miss this fabulous city with its dry and warm climate and the mountains in the background!
