Vappu (May 1st) is the celebration in Finland, the party for students, workers and the beginning of spring. Vappu - Wikipedia. All the students and ex students wear their overalls and their graduation caps. Many start celebrating before May 1st and we usually go with a larger group of exchange students to eat sushi on Thursday and then continue to a bar for a glass of wine. On Saturday night we go to Heidis with our overalls and on Saturday is the official Vappu celebration. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing as we expected a better atmosphere and the weather was not great either. There were some Finnish speeches at the square and they put a hat on the statue and then all the Finns put on the same hat (they will get this hat when they graduate from high school). In the evening there were so many people going out that it was crowded and there was a long line, so we decided not to go and went back home. But I had some interesting conversations with Finns in the line for the entry. On Sunday, the students with overalls met at the observation tower on the hill and had a picnic. We were also with a group and traditionally ate donuts and drank Sima. Unfortunately, most of the group got a bad flu and we were all sick for almost a week.....
