Volcano day

No good weather is forecast today. But I still want to look at two things today and they are outdoors. Well, put on your rain jacket and go.

My first stop is at Craters of the Moon. There are many holes and craters in the ground due to volcanism. Sometimes smaller, sometimes larger, and sometimes very deep. But they all have one thing in common: they smoke and smell. Sulfur is in the air.

A few years ago the entire landscape was completely devoid of plants; back then it certainly looked like the moon. However, the area is now overgrown with greenery, sometimes more - sometimes less. Depending on how hot the air is that comes out of the ground. In some places it's right.

It's warm and oppressive today and it's much warmer at the holes. Walking through the rain with a rain jacket is a bit of a torture.

My second stop is the Orakei Korako geothermal area. There I am taken across the lake in a boat and have a 2.5km long circular route in front of me. The landscape here is characterized by sulfur and shimmers in many colors (yellow, brown, green, gray, white...)

Here the water boils, bubbles and steams. There are signs everywhere warning you not to touch the water under any circumstances.

This is a fascinating landscape. Tomorrow we go to Rotorua. A city built on a geothermal area. I am excited...
