Greifswald is alive

As last year, I am taking the train from Demmin to Greifswald.

After cycling 33 km (plus 4x 2 procedural kilometers), I’m no longer in the mood. I just want to drink something cold and treat myself to the world's best cola 🥫at a kebab shop. There's nothing else near Demmin's train station.

Well chilled, I take the train 🚂to Stralsund and then continue to Greifswald. No special incidents. Although... I just realized that I haven't booked accommodation yet.😳

A week ago, I had given the hotel “Adler Garni” my running or flight pass 🦅and hoped that something would become available last minute at the “Boarding City House.” But I ultimately miscalculated. Now I’m on the phone trying to find a place to stay today and tomorrow. If necessary, I still have my tent.🏕️ But I’m not really in the mood to dig everything out just for 2 nights.

First, I try the youth hostel in Greifswald.

That was where we went for our 10th-grade class trip. It was super fun with “our” class teacher, “my” father.

On the way there, we’re all supposed to catch the train that’s just arriving. However, senior teacher Birkner is still waiting on the platform. When he suddenly realizes that this is not the train meant for us, he calmly whistles the class back out. Just at that moment, the train pulls away. 😳Half the class manages to jump out, the other half continues on. I belong to the jumpers.😜

To make a long story short, there’s a happy ending and a class reunion in Greifswald. This must naturally be celebrated, so senior teacher Birkner sends one of his “best” but capable students to the nearest pub. “Best regards” from Mr. Birkner, he’d like to order 2 bottles of sparkling wine. Said and done. In the hostel, everyone is now supposed to get their toothbrush cups out. “Before everyone drinks alone, let’s toast together.” And thus, it becomes a controlled but fun evening.🍾🥂

“I could sleep in a dormitory today”..., says the friendly voice from the youth hostel – could be interesting, but am I in the mood for it right now?🤔

I’m still on the phone with the restaurant and hotel “Olive.” I swear, the hotel is really called that. 😀Friendly man but the reviews say otherwise.👎

The hotel “Zur Fähre” in Wieck wants 150 euros for one night. Pah, too expensive.

However, the last phone call is a hit. Right in the market at the hotel “Galerie,” which I personally recognized from this year. During my children's yoga training, someone injured their foot, really, and we helped her get to the hotel.

Well, it’s almost quiet as it’s located on a side street, extremely friendly staff, very clean, and somewhat moderate regarding prices.

I freshen up and decide to have Italian for dinner, since I’m not staying at the “Olive”....🤣
