The great bike tour Day 39: Premium cycle path I1 and Jungle Camp

Cyhoeddwyd: 30.05.2022

It's still raining a little in the morning, I take my time, chat a bit with the Dutch retired couple who have been camping and cycling for 3 months. Did you detect things about yourself during this trip? he asks me. Yes, absolutely. A bike tour is many things, and partly also (self) therapy or, to put it more politely: encounters with your own inner pig dog or your own inner hamster, which constantly wants to run on a wheel.

The day before yesterday, on the way from the train station to the campsite, I already spotted signs for the I1 cycle path, today I follow it almost the whole day. Excellent signage, like in Germany, always small side streets or acceptable gravel paths. I only have to ride on provincial or state roads for the last 15 km, but by now I'm pretty tough and ride on the road like my sons used to do on the MTS schoolyard.

Today, conditions are optimal for me, it's cool, only 22 degrees, cloudy, and if at all, then tailwind. Actually, I just wanted to ride to Vicenza and stay at the campsite there, but I'm already there at 1:30 pm. Since I can now assess very well what I can handle and what I can't, I am confident that I can make it to Verona without arriving completely exhausted. It gets dark around 9:00 pm, so I have time until then - setting up a tent in the dark is not so much fun...

Verona has a special meaning for me: I've been there twice, once just for a few days and in February for a two-week language course, I really like the city. On this trip, I spoke more English than Italian and Dutch would have been the most useful, but that doesn't matter. Verona is familiar, I know my way around. I spent a very relaxed Sunday on Colle San Pietro in February and since there is a campsite there, I really want to go there.

The hill is - like all Italian hills - quite steep. I didn't notice the campsite in February and it's clear why not: it's more like a jungle camp in the forest, hidden between trees and old walls on the north side facing away from the city.

Camping Colle San Pietro, 18€, 10 meters in altitude to the sanitary building - I had a choice and took the pitch with the fewest meters in altitude to the toilet, nice terrace at the reception, good WiFi
