West Coast & Pancake Rocks

Cyhoeddwyd: 12.06.2024

A pancake-y hello everyone,

This will be the last post for today as I want to get back on the road before it gets dark. In this post, I will show you some impressions from my journey along the West Coast. The road is really beautiful to drive on and there is a new view behind every corner that I had the pleasure of admiring. However, I have to say that the route doesn't offer much besides a nice view - although that is perfectly sufficient - and I didn't stop and do more tours as often.

Short stop in Greymouth
Found Paua

I even found my own Paua shell at one of the beaches. In Greymouth, I only stopped for a brief moment and washed some laundry and took a look around one of the beach sections for about 5 minutes. But, Greymouth is really not a particularly beautiful city or has anything special to offer.

Pancake Rocks & Blowholes

The really cool stop I made was at the Pancake Rocks. Rock formations right on the coast that look like pancakes made of rocky dough stacked on top of each other. Due to the constant weathering and the sea, these layers are gradually eroded and the rocks take on various forms. These shapes were interpreted by the Maori and various legends about this place were passed down. Even as a regular visitor, this stone interpretation is a lot of fun.

I timed it perfectly (completely unplanned) to be at the Rocks for sunset and was able to watch the sun/cloud play.

There was also a blowhole here, which spit out more or less water depending on the wave and tide. It was really amazing to watch, and I spent some time here until I got a good photo.

Stones are something amazing, and I can't help but wonder what nature, physics, and chemistry can create from the elements of this world. I don't want to study geology, but I find it really fascinating. After visiting the Pancake Rocks, I had a constant craving for pancakes and waffles. Anything hot, sweet, and made of dough. But I could only satisfy this craving in Nelson because I had prepared spaghetti and ate it for the next few days. Meal prepping is a very convenient way to prepare for days without a kitchen, and when I'm hungry, I can just throw one of the Tupperware containers with butter into a pan and don't have to start cooking from scratch. But in general, I manage to eat a varied diet and eat a lot of vegetables and fruits. Because it's not so hot, I can also store all kinds of food in the car without worrying too much about how quickly everything could go bad. I really like traveling in not too hot weather.

My next stop was a good distance further north and again inland as I made my way directly to Nelson.

But more on that in the next post.
I wish you all a lovely day and maybe now you are also craving pancakes. ;)
Yours, Britta
