Two days already in Santiago and we have discovered and fallen in love with the old town around the cathedral. After standing in line for two hours yesterday to pick up the 'Compostela' at the pilgrim office, we were allowed to embrace the statue of Saint James during the cathedral visit. This is an old pilgrim tradition and it is said that all sins are forgiven to the pilgrim by doing so. Although the interior of the cathedral is under renovation and therefore there are currently no services or the famous Botafumeiro (the incense burner) swinging, we were still very impressed and touched by what we could see. The sight of the many pilgrims in the large square in front of the cathedral gave us goosebumps. Some danced with joy, others cried and embraced each other, while others stood or sat quietly contemplating the cathedral and perhaps reflecting on their journey. Although it may sound cliché, it felt like being part of a big family. We all had the same goal, whether we walked the Camino Frances, Camino Portugues, Camino Ingles, or like us, the Camino Norte. It didn't matter if we only walked the minimum of 100km or if some of the most determined walked 800km or more, everyone achieved something in their own way and that deserves recognition. Finally, we must not forget and especially mention the incredible helpfulness and kindness of the local population. Whether it was the street sweeper in Bilbao, a farmer in the countryside, or the older gentleman who kindly gave me a pilgrim's staff. We could mention many more people like them who helped us in one way or another on our way to Santiago de Compostela. Thank you for that and to all, BUEN CAMINO.
