Day 27, from the shelter to the village of Mugla and then to Plovdiv (European Capital of Culture 2019)
In the morning, we had a small breakfast and then we walked through meadows, passed several drinking water sources, and old houses uphill. Near our path, we came across two groups of horses. It was very impressive to see these wild or freely living horses up close. There were two groups with about 25 horses each! I was particularly fascinated by watching the stallion trying to protect and guide his mares. That was definitely the highlight of the day. At some point, we got lost again and only realized after about 1.5 km that we had taken a wrong turn. Once we arrived in the village of Mugla, we took a break, and then I organized a off-road vehicle with a driver who took us 38 km over a pass to Smolyan. From there, we continued by bus to Plovdiv, the European Capital of Culture 2019, where we had booked a room for 2 nights.
(Willi) The ski resorts in Bulgaria are even uglier than the Austrian ones. Concrete blocks with 10 stories and many half-rotten building corpses.
On the way back from the city to the hotel, I get lost. I end up in a pitch-black street that is completely dug up. I activate Google Maps, but it leads me to Best Rest Guest House instead of Best Rest Guest Rooms (my mistake).
I take a taxi and the driver also relies on Google Maps to find the accommodation.
