Further into the Outback towards the north we reached Gwalia, also a gold mining town. There is still a small open-pit mine, but the main attraction is the abandoned village. In late 1963, the mine, whose headframe can still be seen from a distance, was closed and all workers were laid off. The people hastily moved away, and the village has since become a small tourist attraction. In addition to the abandoned village, there is a small museum. The grand house of the mine owner has been carefully restored and is now a small guesthouse with 3 rooms in the middle of the museum.
