Day 101 Mount Everest

Publikováno: 23.07.2017

Wow, today is my 101st day of my journey. How quickly time flies and what I have experienced in it. This little anniversary must be celebrated, and where better than on the roof of the world. The Himalayas are often referred to as the roof of the world. How fitting that today we are going exactly there.

Early in the morning we took the bus to the Himalayan National Park and up to a pass where we were supposed to catch our first glimpse of the impressive mountains. However, the weather did not cooperate. At an altitude of 5200 meters, there was snowfall and thick fog and clouds obscured the view. What a pity...

But that didn't dampen our mood. Our guides had bought prayer flags, which we now hung up on the pass. Since today is Wednesday and that's a good day for Buddhists, may it bring us all good luck. In the end, the prayer flag we hung up was about 300 meters long. It was more strenuous work at this altitude than you would expect.

The weather did not improve for the rest of the journey, so we couldn't see much until noon and our stop at our hotel.

But then, just before lunch, the clouds cleared a bit and we caught a first glimpse of Mount Everest. At first only the summit was visible, and then slowly more and more.

However, after a short time, the clouds covered the highest mountain in the world again. But we didn't miss the opportunity to take a group photo.

After lunch, we set out to visit the Mount Everest Base Camp. We drove the first 4 km by bus to a pre-basecamp.

There we got off and hiked the last 4 km to the Base Camp. We had to overcome about 200 meters in altitude in these 4 km. It was pure exertion, and we had to take a short break after about halfway. It is interesting to observe how the body reacts to unusual situations.

We finally reached the Base Camp.

The weather didn't treat us very well, as it started raining again. So the chances of catching a second glimpse of Mount Everest were zero. Besides, it also got quite cold on the way back. But it was a very special feeling to stand in the Base Camp of the highest mountain. Definitely not something you experience every day.

Back at the hotel, we warmed up by the stove and had several cups of hot tea. We spent the afternoon chatting and relaxing.

And then suddenly luck returned to us. About 1 hour before sunset, the cloud cover suddenly and continuously cleared. And there it was, Mount Everest in all its glory. We couldn't stop taking pictures. The mountain was photographed from every angle. An overwhelming feeling.

At dinner, everyone showed their relief at having seen Mount Everest and everyone was smiling. We spent a long time comparing pictures and happily chatting over hot cups of tea.

Definitely a worthy anniversary
