12.11.18 Periyar - Cochin

Publikováno: 13.11.2018

Today we take the drive down to Cochin. There is still some fog in the mountains and we can observe tea pickers. The journey with Eldo's driving style is a bit rough, with narrow streets and hectic stop and go, once again adventurous. After lunch, we arrive back at the Brunton Boatyard, a hotel we already know. Since we have some time before our sightseeing tour starts, we quickly jump in the pool and take a few laps in the water. The refreshment factor is a bit lacking as the water is very warm. However, we have a splendid view of the Fort Cochin harbor. We continue promptly at 2 o'clock. Cochin is the capital of Kerala. Most of the attractions are located in the old part called Fort Kochi and we can even visit some things on foot. We visit the Chinese Fishingnets, an old way of fishing that is still in operation in many places here. We also visit the oldest Christian church, with the tomb of Vasco da Gama, and then continue to an old laundry house where clothes are still washed by hand. After the City Palace, the synagogue is still on the program, and then we stroll through the market, visit a spice shop where Prince Charles has already shopped.

Cochin had many colonies and therefore has many ethnicities. From here, a large part was colonized.

Our guide confirms that Kerala is doing well economically, with laborers coming from all over India and compulsory education for children.

Upon return, in the sweltering heat, we once again treat ourselves to a swim in the pool before dinner. And since we're right by the sea, we have delicious shrimp, among other things.
