We had a long journey ahead of us, through four countries (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala) to San Cristobal (Chiapas, Mexico).
We start in Granada (Nicaragua), from here we took the bus for 3 hours to Leon, also in Nicaragua. At 3 a.m. we continued with a shuttle. We drove through Honduras to the Pacific coast in El Salvador. 12 hours drive and we reached El Tunco, a small surfer village. We stayed here for 2 nights, enjoyed the wonderful sunsets over the Pacific and the delicious national specialty, pupusas (a tortilla with baked filling and pickled cabbage).
From El Tunco we continued with the shuttle and after 10 hours we reached Antigua (Guatemala). We had been here a year ago, it is a nice little town at the foot of the Agua volcano and with a view of the active Fuego volcano. Here too we tried the national specialties and strolled through the many nice streets in the old town. Eating in the local restaurants was an experience in itself, we really enjoyed it. There were many different dishes, but the tamale (a corn dough with tomato sauce and a piece of meat, braised in a banana leaf) was particularly delicious.
After five nights we started the final section. Another 12 hours and a very annoying Mexican border later, we finally reached San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico. The city was in the mountains at over 2,000m, it was a little cooler here, just right to create some Christmas spirit.
