I enjoyed a great day trip to the nearby Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, just off the South coast. The weather was cold and windy, but still beautiful. Just look at the special light and colors the scenery appears in.
In 1963 and 1973 there were two volcanic eruptions which destroyed most of the town on the main island of Heimaey, which is also the only inhabited one. The cliffed coast consisting of black lava is especially impressive, but also the view from the top of the newly created mountain of Eldfell after the second eruption.
Most of the other little islands of this archipelago have been formed by submarine volcanic eruptions in the past 10,000 years. It's incredible that the people live there with the constant threat of a volcano destroying their homes.
