The last stretch to Cape Reinga

Publicat: 08.12.2023

We spent a quiet night listening to the sound of the sea and were able to enjoy a bit of coffee with a view of the sea together early in the morning. We filled up and dumped our camper and set off towards Cape Reinga.

In the rain we drove to Maitai Bay for our first stop. It only rained lightly or not at all there and we went for a short walk in the two bays. We lured everyone back to the camper with delicious sandwiches.

Then we continued towards Cape Reinga, the northernmost point in New Zealand. The path was very long due to the constant rain, which was sometimes very heavy. We then skipped the Te Paki sand dunes because there was too much water on the gravel road for me.

Since it was very overcast and foggy, we just drove straight to our DOC camping ground. At first it just rained - but after the rain comes sunshine and that's how it was. I quickly walked around the square with E and Benny made the food. The bay was really beautiful. Even more so when the sky is blue. But here it was swarming with mosquitoes and sand flies (?) - I can't have that at all. Wi-Fi or reception was again non-existent here.

I wasn't feeling so well, apparently I caught a cold on the previous windy beaches and E was tired anyway, so Benny hiked alone again to a viewpoint. Let's hope tomorrow brings something better.
