Today, several of our wishes for our stay in Australia were to come true. And I'll tell you right away: we are completely enchanted by this day and what we were able to experience again today.
In the morning we set off to a wildlife sanctuary. This is where animals from rescue programs are housed that are injured or have fallen out of the nest as babies and had to be raised by humans.
There are many endangered species in Australia. Not least because of the climate. We all remember the recent terrible forest fires in which many, many, many koalas that live up in the trees lost their lives. But non-native species such as dogs and foxes are also a threat to Australia's wildlife.
When I arrived at the sanctuary I was immediately positively surprised, because many animals live here completely freely, such as kangaroos, wallabies and emus. And those that need an enclosure had a large enclosure, which also looked well equipped. At least as far as I can tell.
And many of the animals are of course used to people, as they have either always lived with people and been raised by them or were rescued by people.
And so we were able to pet lots of kangaroos and wallabies. They are really soft. And we also got to meet Happy Feet. The big emu was raised by hand and has thought he is a human ever since 😂. But the emu was actually super soft too. You wouldn't think so, given how they look.
Then came the highlight of the day for us. We got to meet Arnold. Arnold is a three-year-old koala from the rescue program who is one of the most endangered species. In his enclosure he has a huge eucalyptus tree in which he sleeps for 18-20 hours a day. Did you know that they only sleep for so long because they eat so much eucalyptus and are basically high as a result? 😂
We were even allowed to stroke Arnold's bottom - I think he has the cutest face ever. His fur is very special. Soft but very thick because it's water-repellent. That was so nice. Kian also found Arnold extremely exciting but I think he's glad we didn't take him home 😂. By the way, we were only there with one other family.
We said goodbye to Arnold and then made our way to Bondi Beach. There is probably the most famous pool in the world. Well, who knows it?
We spent our afternoon on the beach, watched the sun go down, ate an açaí bowl and enjoyed the hustle and bustle. Absolutely amazing. There were also a lot of surfers here, those were the biggest waves I've ever seen.
Then we went to the hotel because our flight leaves at 9 the next day.
