In the heart of New Zealand

Objavljeno: 08.03.2017

Meanwhile, we have also arrived in the capital of New Zealand - Wellington. After returning our car early, we explore the city center a bit. There are lots of cafes and shops on Cuba Street and Victoria Street. We continue to the pier where we can relax on some wooden benches in the sun. While we think about what we could do, a local gives us a tip. We should go to the Newton Street Festival. We think the idea is great but decide to postpone it for now. First, we stroll along the waterfront. Along the way, there is a Sunday market where you can stock up on fresh vegetables and fruits. There are also some food trucks with international food. Patrick tries the Chilean sandwich. Then we continue to Te Papa Museum. Admission here is free and you can explore the culture, history, and nature of New Zealand on 4 levels. The highlight was a changing exhibition - . The role of 8 New Zealand soldiers in World War I is portrayed from their perspective. We also visited an earthquake simulator, entered a Maori house, and saw a huge preserved octopus.

At some point, we've had enough of the museum and head to Newtown. Unfortunately, we arrive at the street event a bit too late. There are food stalls, clothing stalls, and trinkets everywhere. The vendors are slowly packing up, but in the side streets, you can find residents showcasing their musical talents in their garages or on the roof. From young DJs to old rockers, there is something for everyone. With some freshly baked donuts, we enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

The next day, we head towards the shopping street again and look for some unknown brands. Then we walk to the Cable Car Station. Unfortunately, the cable car has been replaced by an electric one and is not such a big highlight. The botanical garden, which is supposed to be beautiful, seems a bit barren to us. The roses are half faded and there are hardly any colorful plants. Well, we're just here at the wrong time of year. The way into the city leads past an old cemetery with fenced graves and the government buildings. Before we continue to the South Island, we sit down in one of the small cafes and enjoy the healthy lifestyle trend of New Zealanders with a buttermilk chicken burger for Patrick and a prawn soba bowl for me.

P.S. Unfortunately, we didn't get around to taking many pictures.
