Roadtrip Tag 64 - Barossa Valley & Whispering Wall

Objavljeno: 18.11.2017

We drove a few kilometers out of the city of Adelaide into the Adelaide Hills. The roads and the landscape reminded us of home. We felt like we were driving through the Löwenstein Mountains. Unfortunately, the weather was also rather German, 17 degrees and rain, so we put on the woolen hats that we had bought the day before. There are also many German immigrants in this region. The region is world-famous for wine production. So now we have the opportunity to visit the wine region of the east after the Margaret River wine region in the west. Both places are located at roughly the same latitude in southern Australia.

The first stop was in Springton, a small village with 602 inhabitants in the Eden Valley. We drove to a viewpoint there. Wine has been grown in vineyards there since 1843. The temperatures range from -5 degrees in winter to 45 degrees in summer, which is said to contribute to the excellent quality of the wine.

Afterwards, we drove through the Barossa Valley on the 'Valley Drive'. There are plenty of vineyards and some larger wineries here. Unfortunately, we couldn't do a wine tasting because someone had to drive, and in Australia, the blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Fortunately, we had already tasted some of the Barossa wines in Darwin. Very good wines, just like back home.

Finally, we stopped at the 'Whispering Wall'. Padi knew about it from the Galileo TV show and we wanted to try it ourselves. The 'Whispering Wall' is a 180m long concrete block that forms the end of a reservoir. There is a bridge on it, so you can walk to the other end. If a person stands on both sides and speaks or whispers against the wall, you can hear it perfectly on the other side. We couldn't believe it and tried it, it works very well, we are still impressed.

The journey continued back to the Adelaide Hills to the German village of Hahndorf.
