My English

Objavljeno: 11.12.2017

“Once I was 16 years old, my Mama told me:” Mach mal einen Beitrag in Englisch, das wäre lustig!:

So here it is, an entry in English. I don’t quite see the fun in it but I thought it’s just a fun thing to do. And what is a better topic to talk about in English than my English and how it has improved so far? I don’t think there is one, or at least the none I could think of.

I would say that my English was already pretty good before I came here. I was able to communicate with people and everything. I took part in an exchange program with Denmark and I watched series in English. I was really into learning the language so I really tried hard to get better.

Now that I’m here, I don’t have problems with the English at all. At the beginning I sometimes had problems with vocabulary but smiling, nodding and hoping that they didn’t ask something always helps (same with German by the way).

I’ve been here for almost 4 months now and I think I can say that my English has improved. I can still hear myself talking shit though but not as much as at the beginning of the year. My range of vocabulary has become bigger too, I’m learning new words every day but often I forget them after a few minutes so I need some days to actually learn the words.

Anyways, just some more words about the Canadian English: It, of course, isn’t the same accent as in Nova Scotia for example. Since the country is so huge the accents differ from town to town (considering a town as a town with 500 000 habitans, there are only 9. The accent spoken here is very easy to understand. People don’t really talk fast (some do though). A typical word people say in Canada is for example “eh” which is like “oder?” or “richtig?” in German. Did you know that there are even differences between the American and the Canadian English? Americans say for example rather “10th grade” while Canadians say ”grade 10”. Interesting eh?

My English is not perfect and  it probably will never be. There will always be words I don’t understand, such as “vorverdaut” (which is pre-digested by the way, I learned it in grade 9). But I hope that after the year I won’t have problems with basic grammar anymore nor easy vocabulary.

Probs to all the people that have read everything of this text. I know it’s really useless and I’m sorry for wasting your time if you think so too. But it’s also very interesting for me to see how my English has improved at the end of the year.
