56 to Mainz

Tour data: Distance 71.83 kilometers (cum. 4,590 kilometers), Ø 19.7 km/h, travel time 3:38 hours

Weather: The thunderstorm from last night has passed and the sky was mostly blue again. There was no sign of the wind at all. On the way to Mainz we ran into a thunderstorm, but it passed quickly. After that it dried off quickly.

Today is a short bike ride. At 2 p.m. I met Rosi and Michael in Bingen after only 28 kilometers. Two friends that I have known for a long time and who found each other during my hiking weeks in Switzerland.

At 8 a.m. I fetched my eBike from the underground car park, which apparently is primarily used as a storage place for customer bikes. I got ready and at 8:15 am I continued my journey towards home. Here, too, the Rhine cycle path is very comfortably developed. Sometimes it runs parallel to the road, but often through the countryside or along the Rhine.

Like yesterday, the places we passed through had many historic buildings worth seeing. So there were enough motives to take pictures. The Lorelei is also well known on the Rhine. A rocky hill made famous by a legend. Here the Rhine is particularly narrow and dangerous for ships. So I also stopped at a nice spot here. There were already 2 others there who just wanted to take a selfie with the Lorelei in the background. I offered to take a picture. This gave the opportunity to exchange ideas. Gerd and Dores, a friendly couple, were also interested in my bike tour. They too, both retired, would like to go on a longer tour and are grateful for tips and experiences. Unfortunately, I missed taking a photo of the two for myself too. Later, at a photo stop, when I saw the two coming, I snapped a snap where they both waved at me. Unfortunately, there was no further meeting.

It wasn't far to Bingen after that and so, as expected, I arrived much too early at the agreed meeting point. I'm currently using this time to write the first part of my daily blog post.

Rosi and Michael also came too early, but they found me quickly before I saw them. It was a happy reunion on both sides, since we haven't seen each other for so long. After a short chat, they invited me to an ice cream, which we ate before continuing our journey.

On the way home they preferred to do something in the hinterland, the Rheinweg was particularly crowded because of today's public holiday (Corpus Christi). Basically, it wouldn't have been a big detour, but the thunderstorm was a little faster, which we couldn't avoid. We found a place to park and were able to move on again less than 15 minutes later.

But we didn't take any more photo breaks, there was more wet nature to see than interesting objects.

In the meantime we have arrived safely in Mainz and soon there will be a beer that I am really looking forward to. I also look forward to our conversations and think it's wonderful to sit together like in the old days, which don't seem so long to me now.
