We leave the Caribbean side on March 7th by bus and stay three days in the capital San Jose. Apart from a few beautiful buildings from the time of wealthy coffee barons, the very beautiful National Theater, the old post office and telegraph station, and a long pedestrian zone in the city center, there is not much beauty to see. The range of goods is characterized by cheap junk, lots of plastic, fast food, and mobile phones. In the side streets, there are poor figures with their heads hidden in a box or using a box the size of a person as a dwelling. In Costa Rica, which was once economically prosperous due to fruit exports, gold and jade discoveries, and is often compared to Switzerland because of its rapid prosperity and independence, hardly anything currently resembles a Swiss metropolis. A beauty pageant, a colorful graffiti, a little street music, and a few artistic sculptures enliven the bleak street scene a little bit.
