The day started with tinkering on the transporter. This time, fortunately, not on my own but on the broken VW LT40 4x4 of my Armenian acquaintances. I had already written something about it in my report on Day 23. Back then, we were able to narrow down the problem, but we failed due to the lack of spare parts (distributor and carburetor parts).
Actually, in the weeks after my last return to Germany, I was able to find a brand new distributor from old stock (NOS) at a fair price through classified ads. The same applied to a used carburetor, which I got cheaply from my favorite scrapyard. We transported both parts well packed in our suitcases on the plane and hoped that the Turkish customs wouldn't make a fuss like they did back then because of the defibrillators (see Day 7). But I got through it just fine, so today we had everything at our disposal.
The distributor was quickly replaced, unfortunately, we didn't have a timing light or a dwell angle gauge, so fine-tuning was not possible. You shouldn't mess with the carburetor in a rush, that would be a mess. But the guys here have good contacts, now that we have the right spare parts, it's no problem at all.
So we declared the surgery over and moved into the city. Shopping for the ladies was on the agenda. Afterwards, we passed by the Blue Mosque, unfortunately, it couldn't be visited at noon. Then there was a huge open-air market called 'Vernissage' in the center, where there seemed to be a lot of tourist stuff, new and used, for sale. Some of it was handmade, it was very interesting to see. Just take a look at the pictures.
Afterwards, we went to the GUM department store again, where we tasted and bought dried fruits. But the other stands where you could buy flowers, coffee, and spices were also very interesting. Actually, they have everything here, even live fish, huge chunks of meat, clothes...
In the evening, we spent time with one of our Armenian acquaintances by the pool at the hotel. His positive attitude and his understanding of the current connections were very pleasant, simply a wonderful conversation.
