Day 180 Kangaroo Island Emu Bay

Публикувано: 12.12.2022

Now it is time to leave mainland Australia for the famous Kangaroo Island. After all the fires in January 2020 we are curious to see how the island looks nowadays. So it is an early morning drive from Mannum down to Cape Jervis to be there in time to catch the ferry to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. The weather is with a mix of sun and clouds rather pleasant although pretty cold. Stuart enjoyed the ferry ride sitting on a chair at the front of the vessel.

Arriving at the island we made our way at first to Kingscote. On the way we were surprised where we saw our first wildlife, in particular kangaroo: silo art just before you enter Kingscote.

Given the good weather we decided to drive from Kingscote to the Emu Bay Beach. On the way, Stuart discovered a lavender farm next to the street and wanted to stop for a smell of lavender but also for some cake & coffee. Unfortunately, the cafe was not there anymore, so Stuart could only enjoy the lavender.

Emu Bay Beach is the only beach at Kangaroo Island where you can drive with your 4x4 on the beach. This came in handy given that it was sunny but very windy, so one would have been covered in sand or better said sandblasting if we would not have hidden behind our car. Stuart enjoyed the relaxing views on the cloud formations and loved to watch the sea gulls wandering around on the beach. What a relaxing start for our trip to Kangaroo Island.

On our way back to Kingscote, we then discovered our first alive wildlife on the street: a goanna was making its way over the street. For groceries to cook dinner we were heading to the local supermarket and were surprised by the variety available. Stuart got very excited as he discovered a chocolate koala from Lindt as the Christmas special edition instead of the usual teddy bear.
