We start our penultimate stage quite early right after breakfast to avoid the heat as much as possible. Initially, we ride along the old railway track on an excellent asphalt road downhill. The first 20km are easy to overcome with little effort. We pass through countless, partially unlit tunnels. Cyclists without lights often come towards us, only noticed at the last moment. Well, nothing happened to us. The first highlight was the small village of Venzone. About 2000 people live there. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The village was almost completely destroyed in 1976. Originally, it was supposed to be quickly rebuilt with precast concrete parts. Fortunately, a citizen committee was formed, which wanted to restore the original condition. By using many photos of the individual houses and the cathedral of the city, this was achieved, and now the village is a beautiful gem right on the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path. We watched a woman making ravioli and enjoyed a fresh fruit drink in a small bar.
We continued on the cycle path. The landscape changed with every kilometer, and slowly we left the mountains behind. Along the way, we could see olive trees, fig trees, vineyards, oleanders, corn and chickpea fields passing by.
At noon, we stopped at a small osteria (tavern). Cold drinks, freshly made gnocchi and espresso were served to us.
After another 20km, we finally reached our destination for today - the city of Udine.
