In the legions of the Romans

Апублікавана: 01.06.2024

If we have already been to Rome and got to know the Roman culture there, then attending a Roman festival is a must. We were in Künzing despite the rainy weather.

The Roman site of Quintana in Künzing is a fascinating example of Roman military history in Bavaria. The site was strategically important as it was located on the Danube Limes, on the border of the Roman Empire with the Germanic tribal areas. It served as a military and logistical center. The Quintana fort was founded around 90 AD and was destroyed and rebuilt several times before it was finally abandoned in the early 5th century. In addition, remains of thermal baths were found at Quintana, which prove that the soldiers and residents had access to these amenities. A camp village grew up around the fort, where traders, craftsmen, soldiers' families and other civilians lived. This vicus settlement was an important economic center and offered various services and goods to the soldiers.

Today's Quintana Museum in Künzing offers a comprehensive insight into the Roman history of the region and displays numerous artifacts and reconstructions from the time when the Quintana Fort was active.

At the 2024 Roman Festival in Künzing, we visited various Roman legions. In addition to the Roman soldiers, we were also able to experience craftsmen and their craft skills. The highlight was the Schola Romana, where you could experience many things about Roman lessons. And of course there were gladiator shows, which unfortunately did not take place in the Künzing amphitheater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because of the rainy weather, but in the museum. My special respect and thanks go to everyone involved with their detailed costumes and equipment for this amusing day.
