It must be said at this point: Peruvian cuisine is fantastic. From appetizers to desserts - all very delicious. No beans and rice, no no. Finest fish and meat dishes, waffles and crepes, cakes and pastries. So, so much for our diet plans.
Arequipa is simply a great city. Built in the 17th century by the Spanish conquerors from white volcanic stone, it was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. The cathedral and its square are the center of urban life; the monastery, as a city within a city, is an architectural gem - a place of peace. The market hall offers everything you need for life. We didn't even realize how many varieties of potatoes there are and that you can buy pasta individually.
Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that the whole city (about 500,000 inhabitants) has no running water for up to 24 hours. But that too shall pass ;-)
Tomorrow we bid farewell to this wonderful city and drive to the Colca Valley, the Valley of the Condors.
