Ometepe Island

After a restful night, we took the ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe Island. We paid the equivalent of €1.40 for the one-hour crossing, and the bus also cost no more than €1. After the sometimes high prices in Costa Rica, this definitely helps our budget. The buses in Nicaragua cannot be compared to those at home. Here, retired yellow school buses from the USA transport people from A to B. The buses leave as soon as they are full. Exact bus schedules are also not needed here. The old school buses are called chicken buses. Some still have the typical yellow color, and others transport chickens, among other things.

The people here are very friendly, and the bus takes you to the hostel. We chose a small accommodation far away from tourist places. Although no one speaks English here, we can communicate somewhat in Spanish now. Not far away, we found a nice little restaurant. You could choose between carne, pollo, or pescado, which means meat, chicken, or fish. Everything was served with rice and beans. We both decided on fish and got really large portions for 120 Cordobas, around €3.40. Although the food was fantastic, no other guests besides a few pigs, cats, and dogs came.

Tomorrow, we will explore the island, but for now, it's time to sleep. Adios amigos!
