Tag 53 - Taking the Ferry to K’gari (Fraser Island)

Апублікавана: 19.02.2023

In the morning, we go shopping at Aldi for the next few days. We discover that many packaged products here are also made in Germany, including Dennis' beloved Nougat Bits. Fruits and vegetables are mostly from Australia. Then we visit the Botanic Gardens and Orchid House in Hervey Bay. Here, we discover an Australian kookaburra.

Then we head to the ferry port of our next resort, which is located on K’gari / Fraser Island. K’gari is the island of the Butchulla people and K’gari translates to Paradise in their language. Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fraser Island is also a national park with no roads, only sand, rainforest, and dingoes. There are two resorts on the island, as well as a few camping sites and private houses. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes and upon arriving on Fraser Island, we are instructed on how to behave if we encounter a dingo (act big and intimidating, maintain eye contact, and do not run away). Our resort is located at Kingfisher Bay and we explore it a bit before spending the afternoon by the pool. In the evening, we have dinner at the Sand Bar. Dennis is enthusiastic about the Chicken Parmigiana, which is often served in Australia with extra melted cheese or chili con carne. In the evening, we have a glass of wine on our terrace and listen to the sounds of the rainforest: crickets chirping and frogs croaking.
