10. Day: On our way south, today we drove along the picturesque Makarska Riviera. This coastal area between Split and Dubrovnik, with the town of Makarska at its center, is said to be the best that the Croatian coast has to offer. However, the coastal road here is quite winding, and progress is slow.
In Makarska, we made a stop, strolled along the harbor promenade, and explored the nearby peninsula. To our surprise, the promenade was quite lively. The Croats clearly take advantage of the sunny Sunday to enjoy a coffee in one of the numerous street cafes. The charm of the town lies in its exceptional location, right at the foot of Mount Sveti Jure, which is over 1700 m high.
We set up our camp in the sleepy village of Brijesta. It's hard to believe that yesterday, 7000 people came here for the oyster festival. Everything here revolves around the delicious seafood, and even Peter couldn't resist.
Instead of champagne, we toast Birgit's birthday in the evening with non-alcoholic canned beer.
