49th Day: When we arrived at the Athens campsite yesterday evening, Dominik greeted us right away. We met him and his family at Akrata Beach about a week ago. It was their very first day of camping ever. They were visibly overwhelmed with the new situation and the rented motorhome. We encouraged them and gave them some tips for their first trip. Late in the evening, Dominik and his son Damian came to our Nuggy and asked if we would like to join them for a visit to Athens tomorrow. He has lived in Athens for several years and knows it well. We happily agreed.
After witnessing the funny changing of the guard at the Parliament building, we went up to the Lykavittos Hill. The view from up there is fantastic! From here, you can overlook the whole of Athens and its suburbs. If there's only one thing I could do in Athens, it would be going up there.
After that, starting from the posh district of Kolonaki, we strolled to and through the neighbourhood of Psirri. After having lunch together, our paths diverged as Dominik had to fly to Zurich for an appointment.
Then we went to the Central Market and inhaled the "delicate smells" in the fish market. From there, we wandered through the neighbourhoods of Keramikos and Thissio. Sometimes on touristy paths and sometimes "behind the scenes". Along the way, we got to see some of the street art by the artist Ino.
Afterwards, we were exhausted and took a nap in the grass at the otherwise rather disappointing National Garden. After that, we had planned to go to the Acropolis Museum. But it has already closed at 5 pm today. Oh well, maybe next time.
In the evening, we were glad to be back "home" in our Nuggy. Big cities and public transportation are exciting and provide a deeper insight into a society. But they can also be exhausting.
