Waitomo Caves

Uñt’ayata: 19.02.2018

These are limestone caves of a special kind because they house glowworms. During a guided tour, we were led through the cave labyrinth past countless stalactites and stalagmites - to a 'Cathedral Cave' with excellent acoustics. Our guide sang us a beautiful Maori song and even the Vienna Boys' Choir has performed a concert here. The highlight of the tour came at the end, where we were taken by boat through a river into a dark cave. Once our eyes adjusted to the darkness, we could see a whole 'Milky Way' of small flickering lights.

Photography was not allowed in the caves, so we quickly took photos of the postcards in the souvenir shop. :*haha*
