Mexico in the rain, 8°C ... my decision was clear: Goodbye San Cristobal!!! The night bus was booked and I also secured accommodations and transportation for the next destinations. On one hand, I wanted to keep maximum flexibility, but at the same time, it was reassuring to know that I already had the sometimes annoying search for the right accommodation behind me.
Even my hostel roommates got nervous in the face of the gloomy outlook and planned their onward journey. San Cristobal was at a crossroads. From here, you could either go to the Pacific coast, where I came from, to Yucatan, where I wanted to go next, or south to Guatemala. Therefore, the hostel library had an excellent selection of Mexico travel guides left by Guatemala travelers. A good opportunity to exchange the explanations of Helmut Hermann and Dorit Heike Gruh ('mexiko kompakt') for a Lonely Planet. The tone of the two travel book authors was too condescending for me in the long run.
I spent the afternoon with Aksel from Denmark. With the 21-year-old, I explored a nature park that reminded me more of the Alps than of Central America.
In the evening, it became quiet and even colder in the hostel, whose common areas were all outdoors. I said a particularly heartfelt goodbye to hostel dog Chester. After the hike, I felt the heaviness of the bed and looked forward to the departure in the cozy coach bus.
