The White Sands National Park is located about 25 km southwest of Alamogordo and at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert. The children were able to slide down the dunes with boards, and the largest gypsum dune field in the world is exceptionally white. The park is also home to oryx antelopes, which were brought here for hunting between 1969 and 1977 and have since multiplied enormously as they do not have enemies here like lions or other animals in Africa.
