Day 41 - West Maui

Uñt’ayata: 24.12.2016

It is December 23rd, which means it's one day before Christmas Eve. We didn't set an alarm again today and slept in until half past eight. The first thing we do after getting up is turn on the oven because we still have to bake our breakfast bread and coconut macaroons. Since we have enough dough, we even make Hawaiian Gritti-Bänze, which are slightly darker than the Hawaiian population.

Unfortunately, the coconut macaroons didn't turn out so well - we accidentally added too much lemon juice. But the rest turned out even better ;-)

After breakfast, we get ready to go on a little excursion with 'Lazy Freddy' (that's what we call our new Jeep, built in August 2016) and explore the west coast. We visit beautiful beaches such as Napili Beach, Kapalua Beach, and DT Fleming Beach Park. The beaches are crowded, partly because of the holiday season and partly because there are numerous vacation resorts and hotels in this region. We have never seen so many people at the beach before. We continue northwards until we reach Slaughterhouse Beach. Apart from a few parked vehicles, you wouldn't think there is another beach there. We discover a beautiful bay with a sandy beach and few people.

Luckily, we brought our bodyboards again. We catch numerous fantastic waves and don't want to leave the water anymore. Even the brief rain doesn't bother us, as we are already wet. Although we would love to ride another 100 waves, we have to take a break. All the swimming, paddling, surfing, and fighting against the current has worn us out (excuse the expression). And that's no joke... We leave the water and the beach with wide stance and get back into our vehicle.

Before we drive back to the apartment, we do some shopping to get groceries for Christmas. This way, we will be more independent for the next few days and don't have to worry about store opening hours, even though they are open almost 24 hours. Then it's time to rinse off the remaining sand, have something to eat, and send a last-minute wish to Santa Claus ;-)
