Farewell to Tortugero

Uñt’ayata: 27.12.2023

Today was the first day we could have slept in. However, we were woken up early by the sounds of nature. Our hut had no window panes, only fly screens. So we listened to the sounds of the jungle to fall asleep in the evening and woke up in the morning with the Montezuma birds, who announced the new day with their not-so-sweet voices.

After breakfast we took the boat back from our lodge near Tortugero.

Boat trip from Tortugero

After a boat ride of about an hour, we continued on the bus for the same amount of time to Guapiles, where we picked up our rental car after lunch.

Plants at the transfer point from the boat to the bus

It took us a good two hours to travel the 120 km to our next hotel because the speed limit was often only 60 km/h on the country roads.
Turning was also a bit difficult because there doesn't seem to be any real right-of-way rules: Anyone who thinks they have the right of way goes first - and that's rarely the tourist in the rental car...

Arenal Volcano

Finally we arrived in La Fortuna, which is located directly at the Arenal Volcano.

It was too late to go hiking in the area because it gets dark early.

So instead we used the thermal springs at our hotel and relaxed in the hot water.

As we sat in front of our bungalow in the evening, we were visited by a cat who came by looking for something to eat.

We didn't have anything for her, but she still made herself comfortable on my lap...
