Enjoying the sun in Uruguay

Uñt’ayata: 05.04.2017

From the natural spectacle in Iguazú, Reto and I (Carole) continued to the last country of the trip: Uruguay.

By ferry from Buenos Aires, we arrived in Colonia del Sacramento, which has a turbulent history. In the struggle between Spain and Portugal and later Argentina and Brazil, the place was repeatedly occupied by one of the countries. What remains is a beautiful old town as a witness to the various influences, which today belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next, we headed to the manageable and cozy capital, Montevideo. Here we could see for ourselves that life in Uruguay would not exist without mate. Mate is the typical, quite bitter tea that is drunk here on every occasion and preferably in the circle of friends. Its preparation is an art and offers many pitfalls for unknowing tourists. In any case, we found it very amusing to see all the locals walking through the city with their mate cups in hand and thermos flasks under their arms.

Next stop was Piriápolis, a coastal town with beautiful long sandy beaches. After that, we continued to Punta del Este. Here too, we enjoyed the endless sandy beaches, soaked up the sun, and cooled off in the pleasant Atlantic.
