Second week Famulatur

Uñt’ayata: 21.05.2017

At the beginning of this week, I followed Dr. Quinga, who specializes in geriatrics and palliative medicine.

It was very interesting and she explained a lot to me about the classifications of geriatric patients. She also gave me a lecture on palliative medicine. Compared to last week, it was much more relaxed, although the student was not as structured as the good Edwin.

With the aforementioned, I have decided to spend the next few weeks of my famulatur with him. I will learn the most there because he allows me to do everything independently and trusts my abilities. Some other people in the hospital want to do everything for me, which bothers me a bit because I want to learn.

Diabetic feet are disgusting when they are open to the tendons and pseudomonas stinks.

Otherwise, I have to say that I am well accepted. Slowly, everyone in the hospital knows me, although knowledge about Germany and history is a bit scarce. I have already been called the son of Hitler, not because of my behavior, but rather because of the lack of education about what happened in the Third Reich.

Since I don't have any specific tasks assigned to me in the hospital, I am sometimes used to play Hermes and fetch necessary things on other stations or bring blood transfusions or blood/urine samples to the laboratory.

The surgeons have already let me clean wounds and promised to teach me how to sew. I am allowed to place catheters and analyze EKGs, as well as take arterial blood. I was able to participate in a gastroscopy, which is performed here without anesthesia, only with Xylocain.

On Thursday night, I had my first night shift and stayed in the hospital for 30 hours.

I am learning a lot here and seeing a lot. I am curious to see what else will happen.

The weekend is being used to explore the area a little with the family, so last week we were at Lake Yahuarcocha.

Yesterday, there was a barbecue and karaoke party at the Valencias' house for the weekend, where we stayed awake until 4 am and I was 'forced' to sing in Spanish and English (classics like Stairway to heaven and much more).

It was a lot of fun and I also met more nice and crazy people.

Yesterday, I made a Tiramisu for us, which we will enjoy today.

I say goodbye again for this week.

See you soon...

Jaysawi
