Rock carving in Taupo

Uñt’ayata: 21.01.2024

Today the journey wasn't that far. It only went from Tongariro National Park to Taupo (approx. 90km).

Since I'll be doing freedom camping again in the evening, my fridge needs to be filled up first. As a rule, I always try to go to the same supermarket chain. Then there won't be so many new products for me to discover. I know the products there and what they look like. This makes shopping a lot easier. Since the supermarkets here are usually huge, it takes a while...

After shopping I have to hurry because I have booked a boat tour on Lake Taupo for today. In the museum in Wellington I was able to see how Lake Taupo was formed using a graphic and now I'm standing here. Lake Taupo was formed after a volcanic eruption. The eruption over 1,000 years ago was so violent that the ground there collapsed and then filled with water. Lake Taupo was ready.

There is a rock carving at Lake Taupo that I would like to check out. However, you can only get there by boat. So the journey begins and it doesn't take long. The rock carving consists of a face, a Maori face. It took 4 years to work on and was created in 1970. So it's not historical, but it is definitely interesting. In addition to the face, there are other rock carvings, including a lizard and several more faces.

After the boat ride I drive to my parking space for the night. This time on the Waikato River. The space is large and offers space for many vehicles. The Huka Falls are also nearby. At this point the wide river has to go through a narrow gorge and therefore the water picks up quite a lot of speed. At the end of the gorge there is a waterfall.

A sticker on the bridge also catches my interest: "It's nice here. But have you ever celebrated life sciences on the roof of Leipzig University?" Mhhhh, what is this sticker doing here? How did he get here? I've seen something similar stuck to a car in Wellington. However, it said: "It's nice here. But have you ever been to Baden-Württemberg?" The second sticker with Baden Württemberg in particular is probably going viral around the world. But the one with Leipzig? 🤔
