Week 3 Budapest - Bač (Serbia)

After Budapest, we only stayed one night in Hungary. The route is great, mostly along canals, where beautiful to luxurious houses are located. There are many small bathing piers on the shore. There we also see the snake in the water during lunch break. It is only after 113 km that we reach a primitive campsite. There are 6 cyclists on the meadow and a very funny Swiss guy creates a good atmosphere. The highlight is in the morning when he unpacks his alphorn and plays it on the bank of the Danube to signal the start! Afterwards, he takes out a small accordion and plays a suitable song for each nationality. For us, it's the Swabian train!

The Danube cycle path can be ridden on the Croatian or Serbian side after Hungary. We want to ride in Serbia and are very surprised when there is suddenly a portable toilet and small guardhouses on the dam. We are at the border, but we have to go to an official border crossing in the next town.

We were amazed at the guarding of the Hungarian-Serbian border. Over several kilometers, there is a military checkpoint every 100 meters, usually a poor soldier who has nothing to do but look into the cornfield.

In Serbia, we rode through very rural areas. Noticeable are huge fields with grain, corn, or sunflowers. It is absolutely flat.

In the small villages, there are simple shops and roadside stands. The larger towns usually have a pedestrian zone with cafes, ice cream parlors, and some small shops.

In Serbia, the people are extremely friendly and helpful. At the bakery, a woman spontaneously gave us bread or they greet us nicely as we pass by.

We sleep in small guesthouses as there are no campsites.

Serbia is extremely cheap for us, for example, a loaf of bread or a scoop of ice cream costs 50 cents and a room costs 20 euros.

We have traveled 1560 kilometers.
