Day 7 - Lost in Helston 😂

نشرت: 21.08.2016

Tonight a strong wind came to Cornwall and in the morning it was raining and still windy. This time I met a lady from Switzerland at the breakfast. She also travels alone, but she only stays in Penzance. We had breakfast together and talked very much in German. It was wonderful. 😊

Due to this I was late this morning and so a chaotic morning started. 🙈😅 I had a quick look to my book with timetables for the buses and saw that the next bus for my trip to Lizard today will leave in about 15 min and after that the next one would come in two hours. So I hurried up and walked to the bus station. Normally I need about 10 min. On the way I recognized that I forgot my banana, I hadn't so much money and no water with me. 🙈 Ok, so I have to buy water in Helston where I have to change the bus and the money will still be enough. In the worst case I have to go back to the B&B before I have dinner.

I arrived at the bus stop in time, but there was no bus. Afterwards I think, I hadn't seen the bus, because the direction was Falmouth and I looked for the bus to Helston. 🙈😂 I looked at the timetables again and there will be also a bus in about 40 min. As I had enough time now I walked back to the B&B to take more money with me as well as my banana and bought water at the supermarket. I was back at the bus stop in time. Now that I had enough money I asked the bus driver for a weekly ticket. Molly told me that there is a weekly ticket for the buses in the whole of Cornwall for £ 26. Only for yesterday's tickets I paid £ 10. I should have known this earlier. 😐 Thanks to Molly. I could buy this ticket on the bus and so I did it. 😊

For the trip to Lizard I had to change in Helston and according to my timetables I had to stay there for about 40 minutes. This would have been ok, but in the end I was there for about 2 hours. 😩

Everything was going wrong. I left at the wrong bus stop, saw an earlier bus driving away, walked through the city, was waiting at a bus stop and no bus was coming, … I don't know how many things I did wrong or were going wrong without my fault. 😂 Sometimes I thought I will never leave Helston. 😅

The bus transportation in Cornwall drives me crazy. It's complicated to find your connections, the buses are very old, there is no information about the next stop in the bus, no detailed information about the tickets, … It is not tourist-friendly.

The whole time I was in Helston it was sunny. So I was also afraid that it will be cloudy or rainy when I arrived in Lizard. Nevertheless, I took some nice and funny pictures in Helston and at the end I was sitting in the right bus to Lizard. I arrived at Lizard and it was still sunny. 😀😀😀

Because of the long way home and the forecast that rain and storm will come, I decided that it is best when I stay in Lizard only for two hours. (the bus back went only one time an hour) I wanted to visit Kynance Cove, beautiful cliffs, as well as Lizard Point, the southernmost point of England. I wasn't sure if I could do both in two hours, so I decided to start with Kynance Cove, which I absolutely wanted to see.

So I started to walk. I normally don't hike. To get to Kynance Cove I had to hike under difficult conditions: strong wind, small ways, not many signs, … 😁 From time to time I met people on their way back and talked with them. First I met a family. I'm quite sure that they were Germans, but we spoke in English. They didn't recognize that I'm German. 😊😊😊 But then I met two men and after two sentences from me, one of them answered in German. He was a Dutch man and could identify me immediately. 😕

The walk along the cliffs was beautiful although the wind was strong. Sometimes it brought me off the way. 😁 The sun was still shining. No clouds. I saw some other coves before I arrived at Kynance Cove. All of them were very lovely. The sea looked great. Like it was in St Ives the colors were brilliant. 😍😍😍

I returned a different way because I couldn't find the same way. There were no signs and I hoped that I will arrive in the village from which I started. I walked and walked and arrived at some houses and saw a Melbourne sign, which I also saw when I left the village! Yeah! I found it. 😀😀😀

I arrived 50 minutes before the bus would leave. Lizard Point was not as far as Kynance Cove. So should I go or should I stay for lunch? I decided to go. It was Friday! On Friday you could take a risk. 😉😁 I walked straight away to Lizard Point, had a little bit of time to enjoy the view of the coast, took some pictures, and walked back. I had so much time that I could buy myself ice cream as well as Cornish pasties and I still had to wait for the bus. Cornish pasties look like smaller 'Calzone', are warm, and have different fillings: chicken, vegetables, cheese and onion, … It was very tasty.

The way back was much better. It only took me about one and a half hour. I thought about visiting Portheleven on my way back. Molly told me that it is as lovely as St. Ives without many tourists. I was too tired to stop again. On the second bus, I met Gloria and talked with her until we arrived in Penzance. It was very nice to meet her. 😊

In the evening I went out with Elvira, the lady from Switzerland. We walked through Morab's Gardens next to our B&B and went to a restaurant to eat dessert. We shared our experiences. It was a very nice evening. I'm happy that I met her.

This was my last day in Penzance. 😯 This time it is very difficult to come up with a top 3, because there are so many top things to do.

Top 3 of Penzance

1. Kynance Cove

2. Minack Theatre

3. The people I met there: Elvira, Nikki, Molly & Michael

Flop 3

1. the seagull

2. the bus transportation

3. the cancelled trip to Scilly Islands
