Maheno Shipwreck, Eli Creek
We got up early and hiked from our campsite to the Windsandblow (2 km). The Windsandblow is a small desert-like area created only by wind. It looks totally unreal when you stand in front of it and see nothing but sand.
On Fraser Island, it is important to pay attention to the tides as the island is only 25 km wide. We didn't want to take any risks with our car, so we planned to wait for the low tide.
However, last evening we went to the beach and saw it at high tide, not a big deal.
So, we could leave earlier than planned and approached the Maheno Shipwreck. We explained in one of the previous blog entries why and how the ship ended up there. It is breathtaking to see a shipwreck lying on the beach.. in a few years, you probably won't be able to see it anymore as most of it is already buried in the sand. Just at the time when all the bus tours arrived, we made our way to the next destination.
Eli Creek, a creek that flows into the sea but consists only of fresh water. The current in the creek is so strong that you can let it carry you out to the sea. That's exactly what we did, the water was freezing cold.. After the refreshing swim, we had watermelon for lunch :-) and then we slept in the sand for an hour :-D.
The day went by so quickly that we wanted to make our way to the next campsite. On the way there, we passed the hiking trail of Lake Wabby and hiked there 'real quick' for 4 km. It was so exhausting to walk in the sand. The last 500 m were through a sand dune.
But it was worth it, Lake Wabby is one of the freshwater lakes on Fraser. It's really interesting that a freshwater lake is formed in the middle of the sea on a sand island.
Refreshed and relaxed, we made our way back for the 4 km hike and started the search for a campsite.
On a website, you had to book your camping zone beforehand and we booked Zone 2 for the second night, so we wouldn't have to travel such a long way back to the ferry on the last day.
Interestingly, all campsites were currently closed, great that it was also mentioned on the website -.- At the end of the evening, we found a spot on the beach, it's nice to wake up right by the water again. It reminds us of Broome.
Mike went fishing again and we watched DVDs and looked at the pictures from yesterday and today. Tomorrow we'll head back to the mainland.
